The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) on Monday confirmed that Arthur Chukwuezugo Okonkwo has switched international allegiance to represent Nigeria.
The switch was approved on April 6, allowing the Wrexham AFC goalkeeper to be eligible for selection by the Nigeria Football Federation’s technical committee and future Super Eagles matches.
In an updated listing on FIFA’s Change of Association Platform, Okonkwo was listed as a new member of the Nigeria Football Federation.
The latest review by the apex football body classified the 24-year-old goalkeeper as a former member of the Football Association Ltd, the governing body of Football in England.
According to FIFA rules, players can request and obtain a favourable Change of Association and sporting nationality.
Before his new switch to Nigeria’s national team, the London-born goalkeeper previously represented England at the youth level, earning 10 caps across U-16, U-17, and U-19 teams between 2016 and 2019.
He currently ranks among the top 10 goalkeepers for clean sheets this season, with a 68 per cent save rate, and has recorded 40 clean sheets across three seasons with his club.
Okonkwo joined Wrexham AFC from Arsenal in July 2024 with about 43 appearances in EFL, FA, and Championship fixtures this season.
With the latest listing, he is expected to compete for a spot in the national team’s squad alongside other goalkeepers, including Maduka Okoye and Stanley Nwabali.
The Super Eagles will take on India and Jamaica in May before facing Poland and Portugal in international friendlies later in June.
